The Ceramic Art of Khandra D. Howard

Statement

My work is a continuing process of exploration, experimentation and evolution of style. I initially produce a prototype piece and then produce additional update pieces that have evolved from developments within a previous one.

My most recent creations demonstrate my current preoccupation with “nature” colors, the mixture of various colored clays and repeating patterns/marks/textures carved or impressed into flat clay surfaces such as tile or platters.  The recurring use of the colors orange, green and brown reflects an internal desire for my work to invoke feelings of invigoration, pleasure, health, restfulness, stability and warmth.  Medium to large scale pieces allow the applied patterns, colors and textures to make a more tangible and visual impact.  When viewed I want my work to produce a visual satisfaction.

My work is influenced by different sources but the texture and patterns in natural and organic forms are a particular source of inspiration for me.  I also draw inspiration from African textiles, African art & culture, everyday life, colors, nature, sea life, insects, vegetation, random shapes & patterns, woodworking and the unpredictable nature of clay.  Inspiration is never a problem … I find it in everything.
